Unity
We are still confronted with a very homogeneous ideal of beauty, of vital, young, and seemingly perfect bodies. I wonder if not more women who, for example, have lived through and overcome an illness, should be given the space to present themselves and their bodies full of pride.
Unity is a portrait series about women who survived breast cancer. Through these pictures I want to sensitize our gaze and show beauty in all its forms.
While looking for women who were willing to get photographed I stumbled upon many different stories. Besides all the hardship, I was amazed by the support these women give to each other — amazed by their openness and their strength.
This project is also a way of understanding my mothers fate and therefore my own. I am trying to face my fears, aiming to show vulnerability as strength.
